I personally use a Jetboil Sumo Ti and a MSR Reactor 1.7L as my main back-country stoves. I also use a MSR Pocketrocket as a backup stove. These three stoves have served me well for a variety of trips and uses. Please keep in mind I eat dehydrated meals so my use of a stove is purely to boil water. If you are a back-country chef another stove might serve you better. At some point I want to add a MSR XGK stove for winter camping. I base this on having attended a winter camping / survival seminar with Learn to Return Survival Training. The XGK (and the previous generation version) was their stove of choice for extended cold weather use.
In the future I will write a more comprehensive overview of why I chose the stoves I did and what my experiences with them have been. However, in the meantime I found a great article I wanted to share. It comes from MSR, but none the less it might answer a few questions for those debating stove options and makes some recommendations on specific stoves for specific uses.
