Welcome To Remote Pursuits

Gear. It makes or breaks nearly every outdoor activity. A wild country hunt high in Alaska’s peaks, a day hike in the Colorado foothills, or a ballgame in Seattle on an early spring day – all require the right gear. Sometimes just a great pair of socks, or the right hat, makes the day more pleasant; but for serious outdoors enthusiasts, hunters, climbers and campers, GEAR can save your life. Remote Pursuits is a leading source of extremely detailed, honest reviews of all types of outdoor gear.

Remote Pursuits is the home of Matt Wymer’s Blog. Matt grew up chasing high country Mule Deer in Eastern Washington State and comes from a family with a deep love for the outdoors and hunting. Matt loves the outdoors and enjoys a variety of outdoor activities, and importantly the gear to make these hobbies a reality. While in college Matt raced Down Hill mountain bikes (in the now defunct WIM NORBA series), learned to rock climb as a member of the WSU Alpine Club, sky dived with the Palouse Parachute Club, ran the Salmon River with friends, obtained an Open Water II NAUI Certification, and enjoyed many outdoor adventures.

After college Matt back-packed southern Africa with a college friend and enjoyed safaris, and surfing and SCUBA diving in the Indian Ocean. Matt’s professional life has moved him and his family from Washington to Mississippi, then to Alaska, and now Idaho. All three of his children where born in Alaska, and they spent 13 years living in The Last Frontier while Matt chased Rams, Bulls, and peaks. In 2013, Matt completed his quest to bring home an Alaskan Dall Ram.

The Wymers enjoy camping, big game hunting, upland hunting, waterfowl hunting, hiking, and playing in the great outdoors. They are usually busy on weekends chasing Gunner, their Pudelpointer. Matt’s wife, Cindy, is a former college athlete, and as an avid runner is a big a help in providing feedback for much of the gear Matt tests as part of his gear reviews. In 2019 Matt & his family moved to Idaho and are enjoying exploring the inland northwest.

An avid reader since childhood, Matt has always dreamed a being an author. He won a Young Authors Award in grade school and went on to write for The Daily Evergreen newspaper while in college. Since college Matt has written for Rokslide, The Alaska Life, Hunt Alaska Magazine, and has blogged on RemotePurusits.com. Most of Matt’s articles are about gear, often providing a deep dive into design, function, and performance. As a free lance author Matt is always looking for the next challenge and hopes to someday write a novel.
