Merino Wool..

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , |

It is my belief that Merino wool is the ultimate base layer, not only for hunters, but for outdoorsman all of types. I base this on merino’s ability to wick moisture, dry quickly, insulate when wet, and fight odors. While merino wool may cost more than its polypropylene counterparts, and require more care when laundering, its long term benefits outweigh the cost. Polypropylene has its place, but for pursuits of a wilder nature, when base layers are worn many days in

Kitting up with Cabela’s Instinct System

Tags: , , , , , , , |

Continuing my train of thought from Thursday’s post (Kitting up with First Lite) and last Friday’s post (Kitting up with KUIU) I am going to use the same potential hunt scenario (Mid October Elk & Black Tail hunt on Raspberry Island) to build a kit highlighting Cabela’s new Instinct line Once again in this scenario we are flying in via a Beaver and operating out of a base camp so I can take more gear than I typically do. As

Kitting up with KUIU

Continuing my train of thought from yesterday’s post (Kitting up with First Lite) I am going to use the same hunt scenario (Mid October Elk & Black Tail hunt on Raspberry Island) to build this KUIU kit. As mentioned we are flying in via a Beaver and operating out of a base camp so I can take more gear than I typically do. As in my earlier post I’ll need a good base layer, solid pants, insulation, and of course

Light Weight Soft Shells: KUIU vs. Sitka Gear?

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , |

Two new products, or rather a new product and a revised product have hit the trails this year. I really think an active hunter needs to check these out! They are dramatically different than any hunting specific soft shell out there. KUIU Chinook http://blog.kuiu.com/2014/06/25/chinook-jacket-in-stock-and-available-in-small/#sthash.5zaJWopu.dpbs I have NOT had the opportunity to see one of these in person, and I hope to get one to do a review on soon. BUT, from watching the video and reading up, this jacket appears

Pants for the Backcountry..

Tags: , , , , , , |

Pants: Seems simple, we wear them most every day, and often without too much thought toward the details. However, to the high country backpack hunter, pants are a critical component of a highly scrutinized gear list. A lot has changed since a pair of Cabela's Microtex pants inspired the original Sitka Mountain pant. Today's hunters have a plethora of options ranging from hunting lines to hiking lines, and even unique options like shorts over base layers. I purchased several pants

Gear Selection…

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , |

I have been talking to a lot of hunters lately who have questions around gear.   To help both them and me I need to quickly discern their gear philosophy.  I want to provide with them good information that helps drive efficient, cost effective decisions. I am going to use rain gear as an example.   While all 3 of the sets I mention below are all solid choices, other options do exist. All purpose gear: Gear that covers a broad spectrum

Ultimate Hunting Gear List for the Western / Alaskan Hunter….

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , |

2013 Ram I though it would be interesting to create the ultimate hunting gear list (clothing specific) for the multi-season, multi-species Western / Alaskan hunter.  In other words, me.  If you hunt in similar terrains perhaps you will find this list of interest.  This list will cover Alaskan August Dall Sheep Hunts, September Moose hunts, fall and spring bear hunts, Caribou pursuits, Alaskan winter predator hunts, and an occasional L48 October Mule Deer hunt.  These theoretical hunts
