7 Year Ram

Tags: , , , , |

7 Year  Ram by Jerry H For six years my buddy Matt and I have chased Alaska Dall Sheep rams. While we were successful in getting Matt a ram a few years back, I was still without one.  This was my seventh year trying and could I finally get my ram? Matt was unable to make it out this year due to some life events, so I got my other buddy Berke to go with me.  It was short

Leupold VX-6 Review

Leupold VX-6 Scope Review Leupold scopes have been a part of my life as long as I can remember. Either they were on the rifles my Dad had when I was kid, or they were "in the works" to be on those rifles! The "Golden Ring" was, and is, a symbol of trust, quality, and American Pride (Made in the USA). In the years since I have used a variety of Leupold scopes from the budget VX1 and Rifleman,

Xpedition Xception: First Look, Bow Review

Tags: , , , |

Its no secret I'm a big fan of Xpedition Archery. I've been shooting an Xcentric 7 for some time now and am really impressed with Xpedition as a company. I was excited to see that Hunt Alaska Magazine listed the 2016 Xception as the 2016 Editor's Choice Award. So much so I decided to do a review on this bow.  After all, this is Alaska, where better to test the Hunt Alaska Editor's Choice than Alaska itself? Below is an

Cabela’s Alaskan Guide Tent Review

Cabela's Alaskan Guide Tent Review My good hunting buddy, and frequent contributor to Remote Pursuits, is a guy who pushes gear as hard as anyone I know. If he has a piece of gear, it gets used. If he has used it for more than a few seasons, its worth paying attention to. Based on a few trips, and conversations we have had, I knew the Alaskan Guide Tents were burly tough and all they claimed to be.  As such

Exo Mountain Gear 3500 Review

Exo Mountain Gear 3500 Backpack Review This is a review of my current hunting daypack, the Exo Mountain Gear 3500. Below is the process I used to choose this pack, and alternatives I considered. Backpacks are a topic that is often thoroughly debated among hunters and rightfully so. There are few things that are as critical to a good experience as a well fit backpack, tailored to your pursuit. I tested a few packs and chose the Stone Glacier Sky 7400

Sitka Down Hoody Puffy Jacket

Tags: , , , |

Blizzard Parka I wrote an article earlier this year on light weight puffys and Sitka’s use of a new technology from Primaloft. I was so impressed with this insulation material that I had to try out a heavier duty version that utilized this same technology.  I previously tested two products from Sitka featuring PrimaLoft's newer insulating technologies, the Sitka Blizzard Jacket and the Sitka Kelvin Down Hoody (KDH). To read these articles, click the embedded hyperlinks above. I

Trekking Poles and Ice Axes for the Mountain Hunter

Tags: , , , , |

My trusty old Black Diamond Poles I am a big fan of trekking poles in the mountain.  For the past six years I have been using a set of Black Diamond Trekking Poles.  Its been a while since I purchased these, but I believe they are very similar to the current Black Diamond Trail Pro Trekking Poles. These poles have been durable, and the Flicklock technology has been outstanding.  However, I took a slight tumble in the mountains

First Lite’s Corrugate Guide Pant Review

Tags: , , , , |

I did a review on pants last year and thought it would be good to add some updated pant reviews from 2015.  The first one on the block is First Lite’s Corrugate Guide Pant.  First Lite states that this is a pant designed to meet the specifications of their Pro Team. Their goal was to create the best lightweight, breathable and durable hunting pant on the market.  I have tried two other pants that align well against the Corrugate Guide;

2015 Caribou Hunt

Any trip in Alaska is an adventure, and as the saying goes “an Alaskan’s weekend is another man’s dream vacation.” As the truck left the lights of Anchorage behind us I reflected on this saying. The frustration of this year’s sheep hunt was countered by the realization of the blessed opportunity to have spent time in sheep country. However, this was the last chance to put meat in the freezer, and with beef and pork allergies in the house,
