Kitting up with KUIU

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , |

Continuing my train of thought from yesterday’s post (Kitting up with First Lite) I am going to use the same hunt scenario (Mid October Elk & Black Tail hunt on Raspberry Island) to build this KUIU kit. As mentioned we are flying in via a Beaver and operating out of a base camp so I can take more gear than I typically do. As in my earlier post I’ll need a good base layer, solid pants, insulation, and of course

Kitting Up with First Lite

I was having a conversation with a few guys and decided to turn that into a blog entry as it seemed to be an interesting topic. My kit (kit = backcountry clothing system) is a mixture of several brands and is a combination of colors and camouflage patterns. The conversation focused on what your setup would be if you could only run ONE brand. This is actually a bit harder than we thought because even though guys may, or may

Comprehensive Rain Gear Reviews

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

I started this journey out of a desire to better understand rain gear and its performance in the field; vs. the hyperbole of marketing and internet biases. This journey has been huge, its exposed to me a behind the scenes peek at the technologies, thought, and processes that it takes to make a high quality, high performing set of rain gear. In reality rain gear performance is both complicated and simple, and the key is to use the gear as

A Sheep Hunting Journey

Tags: , , , , , , , , , |

Mule Deer Camp I grew up hunting mule deer in Eastern WA and dreaming of a sheep hunt I thought would never happen. In 2006 my wife and I relocated to Anchorage, Alaska. As fall came around and the boys back home headed to the Mule Deer camp, reality set in that I was in Alaska complete with all of its opportunities and challenges. Dall Sheep were spotted on a hike, and I could see them from the

Hydration – Why its important ON and OFF the mountain

Tags: , , , , |

The last few weeks were a bit crazy. I traveled, had an odd work schedule, and then had some home maintenance projects that through me out of my routine. Somewhere in the mix I got behind on my water and ahead on my coffee. Headaches and fatigue soon caught up with me. Rokslide just published an article by Brock Akers highlighting "High Country Hydration" and this reminded me to get back into my routine. Almost immediately I felt better. Water

Light Weight Soft Shells: KUIU vs. Sitka Gear?

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , |

Two new products, or rather a new product and a revised product have hit the trails this year. I really think an active hunter needs to check these out! They are dramatically different than any hunting specific soft shell out there. KUIU Chinook http://blog.kuiu.com/2014/06/25/chinook-jacket-in-stock-and-available-in-small/#sthash.5zaJWopu.dpbs I have NOT had the opportunity to see one of these in person, and I hope to get one to do a review on soon. BUT, from watching the video and reading up, this jacket appears

Sitka Traverse Shirts

Tags: , , , |

Back when Sitka began I received the original Mountain shirt as a Christmas gift. Original Mountain Shirt The pocket de-laminated so I gave Sitka a call.   No questions were asked, just an apology and the new design was headed my way.   The replacement shirt was the Sitka Traverse.  I have been running that Traverse shirt for the last 3-4 years, and it has become a vital piece of my hunting kit.   Its warm, blocks wind well, and the
