The River’s Divide is a Bow Hunting film by Donnie Vincent. I saw the preview and was intrigued by the majestic panoramic scenes and music. The flow of it all just sort of pulled me in. I grew up in white tail country, but have very limited experience hunting these creatures as the family hunting trips were always in Mule Deer country. Most white tail shows bore me to tears, some guy sitting in a tree stand whispering…. However, Donnie’s film seemed to be more than that. In 2013 I completed a many year quest to harvest a Dall Ram, so with that fresh on my mind, his narrative and mission appealed to me. I understand the journey…
This is a not a fast paced piece of entertaining television. It’s not a shock and awe photo shoot of harvested animals, but rather a journey you get to experience with Donnie. It’s a slow film, a lot of times I wanted to fast forward, but in the end the story line worked. This is a film that chronicles a journey, the emotions of hunting, the highs, the lows, the moments of panic and joy and awe struck wonder at creation.
I enjoyed the journey, admired Donnie’s persistence, was amazed at the beauty of the Dakota badlands, and agonized with him as we moved from planning, to research, to execution. This is a film for those who enjoy hunting as a process, as a journey, as almost a spiritual connection with creation. It’s not a film for those who simply want to be entertained. It’s a thinker’s film and if that it is you, then you will enjoy Donnie’s journey. I came away thoughtful and excited to see what comes next.
